The Ministry of Defence is responsible for steering the administration of the Finnish Defence Forces, preparing the defence budget, procuring defence materiel and preparing legislation concerning the defence administration.
Defence policy also includes other elements:
- The strategic planning of defence capability
- Area surveillance
- International defence cooperation, incl. NATO cooperation
- International military crisis management cooperation
