Finland’s defence can be divided into three dimensions of activity:

• national defence
• defending Finland’s interests in the European security environment
• defending the values of international solidarity, as shown below.

NATO membership introduces a new perspective to the picture, as it is cross-cutting and applies to all of the functional circles described.
