Participation of the Finnish Defence Forces in NATO’s peacetime collective defence tasks in 2025
Finland intends to contribute to:
- Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1) missions in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and North Atlantic by deploying a Hamina class vessel for a maximum of one month with a crew of up to 40 personnel in 2025.
- Standing NATO Mine Counter Measures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and North Atlantic by deploying a Katanpää class vessel for a maximum period of three months and with a maximum of 40 persons in 2025.
- Peacetime common defence Air Policing missions in Iceland, the Northeast Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean with a detachment of up to two combat aircrafts, three spare aircrafts and a maximum crew of 50 personnel for three weeks from February to March 2025.
NATO’s key peacetime collective defence functions include Forward Land Forces (FLF), standing naval detachments (SNMG and SNMCMG), as well as air policing and air shielding missions. By maintaining these functions in peacetime, NATO demonstrates its readiness and defence capability. Almost all NATO member states participate in collective peacetime missions, either through permanent contribution or regular rotations.
- In 2024, Finland participated in NATO’s collective peacetime missions by contributing to the standing mine countermeasures group in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the Norwegian Sea. Finland has also contributed to Air Shielding missions in Romania, Bulgaria, and the Black Sea.
